At Mity Digital, we’ve been designing and developing websites for nearly two decades. Over that time, we’ve worked with a wide range of platforms, including Joomla – which, for a long time, was a reliable and flexible choice for many of our clients.
But technology never stands still – and neither do we.
While Joomla once offered a powerful open-source CMS with a solid community, we no longer recommend or use it for new projects. Here’s why we made the decision to move on.
Joomla hasn’t kept pace
Web technology has come a long way, especially in the last five years. Modern development workflows, flexible content structures, and integration capabilities have become essential. Unfortunately, Joomla has lagged behind in many of these areas.
Its user experience feels dated, both for developers and content editors. Even simple tasks can feel cumbersome compared to more modern platforms. And while Joomla 4 and 5 brought some improvements, it still doesn’t offer the flexibility and ease of use that today’s websites demand.
Security and maintenance headaches
Keeping a Joomla site secure often means constant vigilance. Third-party extensions can introduce vulnerabilities, and keeping everything up to date is a manual, sometimes risky, process. We’ve seen clients hesitate to update because of the fear of breaking something – and that’s not how a CMS should work in 2025.
Modern platforms offer a better balance between flexibility and security – giving us (and our clients) peace of mind.
The web world has moved on
The broader web development community has shifted. Developers, designers, and agencies alike have moved to platforms that better support customisation, modern architecture, and performance. Laravel (the framework we specialise in) is a prime example of where innovation is happening – and Joomla just doesn’t play well in that (or any) space.
We’ve found something better
At Mity, we’re big believers in using the right tool for the job. For most of our new builds, that tool is Statamic – a modern, flat-file CMS built on Laravel. It’s fast, secure, flexible, and editor-friendly. It gives us complete control over how a website is built and allows us to deliver exceptional results for our clients.
Statamic doesn’t come with the bloat of traditional CMSs. Little reliance on plugins, no clunky interfaces – just a powerful, modern content management experience.
What about existing Joomla sites?
We still support our existing clients running Joomla, but we’re upfront about the limitations and potential for being hacked or breaking. For anyone looking to upgrade or future-proof their site, we’ll always recommend a platform that’s better aligned with where the web is headed.
Joomla had its time – and we’re grateful for what it helped us achieve in the past. But our goal is to build fast, modern, secure websites that are a pleasure to use and easy to maintain. That’s why we’ve moved on.
